Urgent hire of Senior Node+React Developer

IT Consultancy from the EU approached UASOFTDEV with an urgent request to find a skilled Senior Node+React Developer from Ukraine who is located in the EU.

We didn’t have experts available on the bench at that moment, so we started sourcing freelancers.

The hiring process was challenging for the candidates. HR-inerview on the customer’s side included more than 10 tech questions from the team, and the developer was given “a function” to solve during the first interview. Overall, there were at least 3 interview stages, including deep tech interviews with live coding. Also, for the customer, candidates needed to have strong, soft skills, be “alive”, and be proactive team players.

To find a “smiling” and at the same time skilled dev was an additional challenge for us; those who have been working in IT for more than 10 years understand us… Most of devs are kind of introverts 🙂

The unexpected obstacle was that Senior candidates with more than 10 years of experience had forgotten the theory and failed the first interview stage – they didn’t manage to solve the function. They also gave a lot of wrong responses to tech questions.

Considering the issue, we decided to switch our focus to candidates who are Middle-Senior Level (4-6 years of experience), young, proactive team players who are skilled enough to work on challenging projects under pressure and, at the same time, know the theory well enough to pass all interview stages.

“The right candidate” with 4,5 years of experience was among the first lists of candidates that we provided within 72 hours after getting the requirements, and luckily, we gave him a chance (he had less experience than required by The Customer) and processed him simultaneously with more Senior guys.

Unexpectedly,  he was the only one who made it to the third interview with the CTO; even after validation from the CTO, the customer still wanted to double-check this Candidate and arranged 4th stage with the Team Lead of the project where the Developer was supposed to work.

What was done

An EU-based IT consultancy urgently needed a Senior Node.js + React developer from Ukraine, located in the EU. With no available talent on the bench, we quickly began sourcing externally.

The hiring process was intense – it included live coding, multiple technical interviews, and strict soft-skill requirements. Candidates needed to be both technically sharp and proactive team players.

We first targeted very senior devs (10+ years experience), but many failed basic technical questions or couldn’t solve the coding task. Realizing the gap, we shifted focus to strong Middle-Senior candidates (4-6 years), more in touch with current practices.

Within 72 hours, we submitted a 4.5-year experienced developer. Despite being less senior than requested, he passed all four stages, outperformed others, and received final approval from both the CTO and Tech Lead.
